Why use Magneto Optical?

5.25-inch MO and WORM disks combine the qualities of high-speed random access and long archival life to suit a variety of applications. including storage of diagnostic imaging, HIPAA and other regulatory compliance, non-linear audio/video editing, graphics processing, and document archiving by government offices and libraries. From 1X to 14X, Sony MO media is optimal for mission-critical storage environments that require both longevity and performance.

Sony introduced the first 128 MB 3.5" MO disk in 1991 and subsequently launched 230MB, 540/640MB, and LIMDOW versions as well to accommodate a wide range of applications. In order to maintain the broadest application spectrum possible and ensure that older data stored on previous generations of MO are easily accessible, the GIGAMO drive is designed to be able to read and write MO disks of all capacities, thereby providing a secure migration path to the future. Sony's original antistatic hard coat protects the disk against scratches and dust, and the shutter is made of a strong, lightweight and wear-resistant aluminum alloy which contains a high magnesium content to maximize smooth disk operation.

Sony MO disks offer consistently stable performance, thanks to the adoption of Sony's own Wide Margin Recording Film, which can accommodate fluctuations in the laser power of a variety of user environments, as well as a high-precision stamper and molding technology. The use of Sony's own cartridge design and parts gives Sony MO disks as many as 100,000 load/unload cycles per side for superior durability in auto-changers. MO technology also offers

  • Maximum data transmission of 6MB/s and average seek time of 25 milliseconds.
  • High-speed Sony MO disks spin at hard-disk speeds, so files can be accessed in milliseconds.
  • Non-contact read/write and Sony materials science gives a 50-year archival life with over 10 million read/write cycles and 1 billion reads.
  • 2.3 GB capacity on one pocket-sized 3.5" MO disk.
  • Backward drive compatibility with all 3.5" MO media.
